1. Define Your Website Goals and Objectives

The first thing you want to do is to figure out what you want your website to do for you. What are your goals for your business, who’s your target audience, and what do you want them to do?

When you know what you want your website to do, you can set it up to help you do those things. Some goals might be to get more leads and increase your sales, or get the word out about your business.

If you know your target audience, you can set your website up to meet their needs. You can make it more engaging and user-friendly, giving them what they’re looking for. This in turn will help you make more sales.

2. Choose the Right Domain Name and Hosting

The next step is to get a domain name for your business. That’s the online address that leads people to your website. It’s one of the first things people see when they come to your site.

Ideally, it should be easy to remember and relevant to your business. There are plenty of places to get your domain name, some are better than others. The one I use is Godaddy and they’ve always worked fine for my domains.

When you get your domain name you need to choose what type of extension it’ll have. Some examples are .com, .net, and .org. There are also a lot more to choose from. They’ll all work, but my recommendation is the .com.

Then you need to get hosting for your website. It’s an online service that stores all your website’s files and makes it viewable on the Internet. There are plenty of places for this too.

Just like with your domain name, some places are better than others. The one I use for this site is Siteground. The service is great, and they not only help keep your website running well, but fast.

The two places I mentioned, I use and I’m happy with. I would recommend them, but shop around and do some research for yourself. See what works best for your business.

3. Gather and Create the Content

It’s always best to get the content together for each webpage before you start building your website. Like what you want to say to people on your Homepage, your About page, and all your other pages.

The goal with this is to take people on a tour of your site. Showing them what your business offers and helping them see why they should use your services.

You also want to get together some photos and even some videos if you have any. If you don’t already have any photos of your business, you can take some yourself or get a photographer.

The same goes for videos if you want to have any on your website. You don’t have to, it’s totally up to you. If you do, you can either take some yourself or hire a videographer.

Design Graphics

Do you already have a logo or any other graphics that you’ve used before for your business? Like for business cards, hats, or t-shirts? If so, you’ll want to get the files for those to use on your website.

If you don’t have a logo or any other graphics, you can learn how to create some yourself or you can hire a graphic designer.

Keyword Research

Before you finish gathering, you need to get some SEO content. Each page on your site needs to have some keywords, a title tag, and a meta description to help people find your website. What are those?

The keywords are the topics on your page that people may be searching for. The title tags and meta descriptions are what people see on the search results page.

I’ll use this article as an example. So my main keyword is “how to get a website for my business”. If somebody is searching for something using that keyword phrase and this article comes up, they’ll first see my title tag and meta description.

Which looks like this:

The title tag is: “How to Get a Website for My Business”

The meta description is: “See the steps needed to create a professional website for your business. Find out what it takes to get started and how to boost your online presence.”

4. Plan Your Website Structure and Design

It’s time to decide on what pages you’re going to have on your website and how they’ll all be connected. Make a list of all the pages and save them for reference.

Something like this:

Use whatever pages you think are best for your business. This will help you get organized for your website’s design.

Next, it’s time to plan the layout structure of your website. You want to get all the content that you gathered and see how it can be arranged. Look at the text that you wrote, and your photos and videos.

You also want to use interactive elements like call-to-action buttons. You can get ideas and inspiration on how to do this by looking at other websites. Do you have any favorite websites? Check them out.

Pinterest and Behance are a couple of sources you can look at, but there are countless other sources to get inspiration from too. Look at design types that would work best for your business.

When you’re planning the layout of your website, you need to have a design plan for different devices. Desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones all have different design layouts. This is called responsive design.

The device used mostly nowadays is the smartphone, so you want to pay close attention to that design.

5. Select the Right Website Building Platform

Now you need to choose your website-building platform. This is called a content management system, and it’s what you’ll use to build your website. There are some different types, so I’ll go over some of the most common ones.

If you want to have the most control over your design, and you’re somewhat tech savvy, then WordPress might be your best bet. Currently, over 43% of websites on the internet are built on WordPress.

It’s the one I use for this site and all the sites I build. I’ve been using WordPress for over fifteen years.

Maybe you need one that’s a little easier to use and better for beginners, then you might look at Wix or Squarespace. You may want to be able to sell products on your website, then a good option would be Shopify.

6. Build Your Website

This is where to fun begins, building your website. Getting things set up for your website design will vary depending on what platform you choose. If you need any help with the setup process, let me know.

Once you get things set up you can start putting your website together. You can find plenty of videos on how to do it. If you decide to use Squarespace, you can YouTube “How to Build a Squarespace Website”.

The same goes for WordPress, Wix, Shopify, or any other website-building platform. There will be a video on how to do it, and they’ll walk you through the whole process.

7. Optimize It for User Experience and Mobile Responsiveness

Making your website user-friendly and easy to navigate is very important for your website visitors. It needs to be responsive and designed correctly for each of the different screen sizes.

If you’re not sure how to do it, then you can get ideas from other websites. If you have some favorites, see what theirs looks like on different devices. It can always get better with changes and updates over time.

8. Use Some SEO Strategies

Get each page of your website set up for the search engines. Again, this is called SEO, which stands for search engine optimization. This will help with visibility and getting your website in front of people.

Another thing that helps with this is creating valuable content. In other words, writing helpful articles or having them written and then putting them on your website. It’s a great way to attract website visitors.

9. Add E-commerce Functionality (If Needed)

If you’re planning on selling things right from your website, then you’ll need to set up an online store with a secure way to take payments.

You’ll also need to be able to upload product listings, set prices, and have available shipping options. Make your checkout process as easy as possible for your customers.

Shopify is a good website platform for this. It’s designed specifically for these things. WordPress also has a functionality addon called Woocommerce which is set up for this too.

10. Test Your Website

Next, you want to go through your site and make sure everything is working like it should. Check your call-to-action buttons, all your links, and any interactive forms you might have.

Then double-check it again to see how it looks on the different device sizes. Also, check to see how it looks on different web browsers. This will confirm that it works well for all users.

To finish off this step of the process, have some people that you know take a look at it and get their opinion. They might give you some ideas that could improve the user experience of your website.

11. Promote Your Website

Once you’re happy with your website, and you’ve gotten some good feedback on it, it’s time to let everybody know about it. Get some updated business cards that have your website address on them and pass them out.

If you have any customers that you’ve worked with before, let them know about it too. Also, don’t forget to get on all your social media channels to help get the word out.

12. Keep Your Website Maintained and Updated

When your website is done, it’s never finished. Because it still needs to have content updates and ongoing maintenance to keep it secure and running at its best.

There will be new updates for your website platform pretty much every week. Without keeping them updated, it can affect the performance of your site.

If you or somebody in your company is fairly tech-savvy, then you can manage this. If not, or if you just don’t have the time because you’re too busy running your business, let me know, and I can help you.

It’s also a good idea to add new articles on your site as we talked about earlier. This will help keep you relevant, engage your visitors, and help you show up more in the search engines.

Getting a website for your business is a crucial step in creating an online presence and reaching more people. It’s not just an option anymore, it’s a necessity.
